Water is important for us to drink everyday, but it is also a key to Weight Loss

  • Initial weight loss is largely due to loss of water, and you need to drink an adequate amount of water in order to avoid dehydration.
  • The process of burning calories requires an adequate supply of water in order to function efficiently; dehydration slows down the fat-burning process.
  • Burning calories creates toxins (think of the exhaust coming out of your car), and water plays a vital role in flushing them out of your body.
  • Dehydration reduces the  supply of oxygen in your blood and in turn to your muscles.  Not drinking enough water makes you tired because of this.
  • Your food intake should include a good amount of fiber.  You need lots of water to process all that fiber.  The lack of water will cause constipation
  • Water is King when eating and reducing that urge for a second helping.  Water with a meal helps you feel fuller as you eat.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

The common rule on water is that you should drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.   This is the best rule of thumb for ensuring you are drinking enough, but body weight and the amount of water dense foods, like fruits, and change that number slighlty.

You will know if you are drinking enough water, when your urine is a pale yellow. Keep in mind that vitamins and supplements can discolor urine.  Just make sure you are not drinking so much you are running to the bathroom all the time.

Tips on Drinking Water

Drinking other fluids like soda, coffee, alcohol, and energy drinks do include the intake of water, but they reduce the bodies ability to expel the water and decrease the overall benefits that come from drinking pure water.  If you drink other stuff, just make sure you are drinking more water to counter it.

  • When you feel thirsty, you are already short on water.  Avoid this by always keeping water at hand and drink small amounts as the day go on with the goal of eight 8 ounces glass a day
  • Start the day off with water.  You are already lacking water when you first wake up.  Drinking a glass or two early in the day will help kick start the day, wake you up, and make you less hungry
  • Experiment with your water.  Many people report they don’t care for the taste of water.  Some of this can be counter by the temperature at which you drink it.  You can also flavor it up a little if you use healthy and natural ways to do it.  Like adding lemon juice, or lime juice, or even strawberry juice.  Mix it up and have fun and see what you like.  Check out our Lemon Shake-up recipe
